How Flame Retardants Work

Flame retardants are special chemicals that interfere with the combustion process, preventing flames from spreading along cables. Depending on their type, they work through:

  1. Gas-phase inhibition – Releasing inert gases that disrupt the flame’s free radicals.
  2. Condensed-phase protection – Forming a carbonized layer on the surface to block oxygen and heat.
  3. Cooling/dilution effect – Releasing water or inert gases to lower temperature and dilute combustible gases.

These mechanisms ensure that your cables remain protected even in harsh industrial environments.

Maintaining Strength and Flexibility

Unlike surface coatings, flame retardants in our PET braided sleeving are fully integrated during the extrusion stage.

  • Proper additive levels (<10%) do not affect filament strength or braid stability.
  • The braided mesh structure maintains excellent abrasion resistance, flexibility, and expandability.

This allows the sleeving to self-carbonize during flames while keeping cables safe and operational.
