Engineering Support

From Product Selection to Prototype Validation

Selecting the right cable protection solution requires more than matching a sleeve to a cable diameter. Material properties, product structure, operating temperature, abrasion exposure, flexibility, flammability, installation method and industry standards can all affect product performance.

MJ FLEX provides application-based engineering support for wiring harness manufacturers, cable assembly companies, OEMs and industrial customers. Our team supports projects through four key stages: Product Selection, Custom Design, Prototyping and Testing Support.

By combining material expertise, product engineering and manufacturing experience, we help customers reduce development risks and move efficiently from initial requirements to stable mass production.

Product Selection

Selecting the Right Product for Your Application

Different cable protection products offer different levels of abrasion resistance, flexibility, temperature resistance, flame retardancy, electrical insulation and installation convenience.

MJ FLEX helps customers select suitable solutions from a broad product portfolio, including:

  • Expandable braided sleeving
  • Self-closing braided sleeving
  • Split woven cable wrap
  • Wrap-around cable sleeving
  • Textile cable sleeves
  • EMI shielding sleeving
  • Fiberglass sleeving
  • High-temperature sleeving
  • Heat shrink tubing
  • Hydraulic hose protection sleeves
  • Spiral wire loom
  • Custom cable protection products

What We Evaluate

Cable and Bundle Dimensions

We review the minimum and maximum cable bundle diameters, branch points, connectors and available installation space.

For expandable braided sleeving, the installed diameter affects expansion, surface coverage, flexibility and product consumption. For self-closing sleeving, it affects overlap and closure performance.

Operating Environment

We consider the conditions the product may encounter, including:

  • Abrasion and mechanical contact
  • Continuous or intermittent movement
  • Vibration
  • High or low temperatures
  • UV and outdoor exposure
  • Moisture
  • Oils, fuels and chemicals
  • Electrical insulation requirements
  • Flame and radiant heat
  • Electromagnetic interference
  • Hydraulic-fluid leakage

Installation Requirements

Product selection also depends on how the sleeving will be installed and maintained.

Important factors include:

  • Whether connectors are already installed
  • Whether the wiring requires regular access
  • Installation speed
  • Minimum bend radius
  • Branch points
  • Cutting method
  • Removal and reinstallation
  • Available installation space

Compliance Requirements

Depending on the product and application, we can evaluate requirements related to:

  • UL 94
  • VW-1
  • FMVSS 302
  • EN 45545-2
  • ECE R118
  • VSTD-19
  • RoHS
  • REACH
  • Halogen-free requirements
  • UV Resistant
  • Customer-specific standards

Customization feasibility and minimum order quantity depend on the selected material, size, color and manufacturing process.

Prototyping

Verifying the Design Before Mass Production

Prototyping helps customers evaluate a product before committing to volume production. It is particularly important for custom materials, new structures, replacement products and demanding applications.

Based on the agreed preliminary specification, MJ FLEX can prepare samples for dimensional inspection, functional evaluation and customer installation trials.

Our Prototype Development Process

01   Requirement Review

We review the application, cable dimensions, technical specifications, samples, drawings and target performance.

02   Technical Evaluation

Our engineering team evaluates material suitability, product structure, manufacturing feasibility, potential risks, expected cost and scalability.

03   Prototype Preparation

Samples are produced according to the preliminary design. Several materials or structural options may be prepared when comparison is necessary.

04   Internal Evaluation

Prototype products may be checked for dimensions, expansion range, coverage, overlap, flexibility, surface condition, installation performance, structural consistency and relevant mechanical properties.

05   Customer Application Trial

Customers are encouraged to install the prototype on the actual cable, wiring harness or hose assembly and evaluate it under representative operating conditions.

06   Design Optimization

The material, size, density, thickness, overlap or other parameters can be adjusted according to the test results and customer feedback.

07   Final Sample Approval

After validation, the approved sample and specification can be retained as references for mass production and quality inspection.

Alternative Product Prototyping

MJ FLEX can also develop cost-effective alternatives to existing cable protection products.

Customers can provide:

  • Physical samples
  • Competitor part numbers
  • Technical datasheets
  • Drawings
  • Test reports
  • Application requirements
  • Target cost

Our goal is to identify and reproduce the critical functions required by the application—not simply copy the product’s appearance.

Testing Support

Performance Validation Based on the Application

Testing helps confirm whether a selected or customized product meets the agreed technical requirements.

MJ FLEX can provide internal testing support and coordinate specialized testing through qualified third-party laboratories when required.

Testing May Include:

  • Dimensional inspection
  • Expansion and coverage verification
  • Overlap measurement
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Tensile strength
  • Breaking strength
  • Burst resistance
  • Flexibility
  • Flammability
  • Temperature resistance
  • Heat aging
  • Dielectric strength
  • UV resistance
  • Oil and chemical resistance
  • Noise-reduction performance
  • Application-specific functional testing

The appropriate testing method depends on the material, product structure, operating environment and applicable industry standard.

Testing Plan Development

Before testing begins, we work with customers to confirm:

  • Test objective
  • Applicable standard
  • Sample size
  • Sample conditioning
  • Test conditions
  • Acceptance criteria
  • Required documentation
  • Internal or third-party testing
